Where I had been lately: Yogyakarta (Indonesia)

I promised you a special report but consider this as a “movie trailer” to that. I must admit that coming from Singapore to Jogyakarta was a shock just in the airport. And fortunately I have no picture of the nice rats that were jogging around the airport. Imagine a body builder plenty of muscle and volume. Try to imagine a body builder rat. That’s it! ¿nice?

What Not to Miss in Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is probably the city with more tourist visitors ratio in Indonesia. Also known as Jogja it’s Royal Palace and lot of cultural landmarks make it a place you must visit when travelling to this part of the world. Beautiful scenery, heart of javanese art and culture and with a large student community.

Visit Borobudur Temple

This ancient temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. The temple dates back to the 8th century and features intricate carvings and over 500 Buddha statues. Be sure to wake up early to catch the sunrise over the temple, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Prambanan Temple

This Hindu temple is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia. The temple features towering spires and intricate carvings, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in history or architecture.

Traditional Javanese Culture at Kraton Yogyakarta

Kraton Yogyakarta is the palace of the Sultan of Yogyakarta and is a must-visit for anyone interested in traditional Javanese culture. The palace is a beautiful example of Javanese architecture and features a museum that showcases the history and culture of the area. Be sure to catch one of the daily cultural performances, which feature traditional dance and music.

Yogyakarta’s food

Yogyakarta is known for its delicious cuisine, which blends Indonesian and Javanese flavors. Be sure to try gudeg, a dish made from jackfruit that is slow-cooked in coconut milk and served with rice. Another must-try dish is sate klathak, which features grilled meat skewers served with spicy peanut sauce.

Arts Scene

Affandi Museum, which features the works of one of Indonesia’s most famous artists. You can also visit the Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, which hosts regular art exhibitions and performances.

Hike Up Mount Merapi

If you’re looking for an adventure, consider hiking up Mount Merapi. This active volcano is located just outside of Yogyakarta and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Be sure to go with a guide and take all necessary precautions, as the hike can be challenging.

Parangtritis Beach

Just a short drive from Yogyakarta, features black sand and great views of the ocean. You can rent a beach chair and umbrella and enjoy the sun, or take a dip in the refreshing water.
