Many explorers have contributed to the exploration of Antarctica throughout history. Some of the most notable include:
- Captain James Cook, who led the first expedition to circumnavigate Antarctica in 1772-1775
- Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led several expeditions to Antarctica in the early 20th century, including the famous 1914-1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
- Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer who became the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911.
- Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who were the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953, also part of the British Expedition led by John Hunt that reached the South Pole on January 3rd, 1953
- Dr. Vivian Fuchs, a British explorer who led the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1955-1958, which was the first successful land crossing of Antarctica.
These were some of the main explorers, but many other people and teams have explored and continue to explore Antarctica, making valuable contributions to our understanding of this remote and inhospitable continent.
One of our favourite expedition was The Belgica expedition.
It was a Belgian Antarctic expedition that took place between 1897 and 1899. The expedition was led by Adrien de Gerlache.
In a next post Mr. Burung will tell us more about The Belgica.
